A Study on the Relationship between Stress, Dry Eye and Dry Mouth in University Students

Abstract
Purpose : This study was to investigate the relationship between stress, dry eye, and dry mouth for university students.

Methods : A self-reported survey on general characteristics, stress scale, dry eye scale, and dry mouth was conducted that 268 university students(113 males and 155 females) took part. In order to analyze results, the statistical methods such as t-test, analysis of variance, correlation analysis, covariance analysis and regression analysis were used.

Results : The stress score for all subjects was 64.61¡¾18.00 in average. There was a significant difference in groups of either female, the ones drinking more than 3 cups of caffeine per day. The dry eyes score was 11.26¡¾8.18 in average. There was a significant difference in groups less than 8 hours of sleeping time, more than 3 cups of caffeine per day and using computer for 3~5 hours per day. The dry mouth score was 15.76¡¾10.39 in average. There was a significant difference in the item of using computers for 3~5 hours per day.

Conclusion : It showed that there was a correlation between stress, dry eye and dry mouth. Dry eye seemed to be caused by sleep time, computer use time and stress, while the dry mouth is affected by one factor the stress. It is required to intervene when dry eye and dry mouth are accompanied and last a while.
